Handcrafted Porcelain Vessel
Unearthed Exhibition 2022: Layers
This series of vessels explores the geological richness of the Tasmanian coastline, where time and pressure shape the land into dramatic cliffs and shifting strata. Handcrafted from Keanes Lumina porcelain, each form becomes a canvas for the story of stone, erosion, and the passing of millennia.
The surfaces are built through a process of carefully printing and layering coloured slips, creating subtle textures and tonal shifts that mirror the depth and complexity of geological formations. Like the cliffs themselves, the vessels reveal a history held in layers — compressed, fractured, and weathered, yet enduringly beautiful.
Through this work, I sought to capture both strength and fragility: the permanence of rock and the delicacy of porcelain, united in forms that honour the earth’s natural rhythms. Each vessel becomes a fragment of landscape, holding within it a memory of place and time.
This piece was awarded the TCA Derwent Ceramics Supplies Award for Sculptural or Non-Functional Work, 2022.
